HOUSE PARTY

My eyes are closed while I am remembering.

When I concentrate enough…I can see the people, the smells, the sounds…

The basement was painted with black light paint…

When the colors illuminated…you could see psychedelic shapes and clothes looked weird…

The stereo was over in the corner pumping loud with Marvin Gaye, Earth Wind and Fire, or Parliament…

My aunt and uncle were dressed to impress…

Her Jean Nate’…

His Old Spice…

Seagram’s 7 for her…maybe some Crown for him…

Food, homemade rolls, gin, plenty of liquor…

*I used to go out to parties…and really get down…*

Grown folks upstairs eating, drinking, playing cards…

The teenagers down the street…sitting on the steps…smoking weed…

My aunt and I in our matching outfits…

Dancing and grooving to the music…

Her radiant smile lighting up a room…

She and I dancing in the middle of the room…

*Flashlight…neon light…*

Soul train line in the middle of the basement…

The old cats playing pool…

Plenty of shit talking too…

My mom’s spaghetti…my uncle’s chili…broccoli and cauliflower with the dip I made…

I lived for my aunt and uncles house parties.
